gg 13, first time we ever got the better of ya... bout time : lots o' fun!

HASTINGS, NE -- It is a body part -- just not the part, nor from the body, it was thought to be.

It is a teat from the udder of a live cow.

The severed body part, found on Feb. 12 in Hastings, has been identified through tests at the Nebraska State Patrol Crime Lab in Lincoln.

A pathologist's examination confirmed that the tissue was bovine and not human, according to a press release from the Hastings Police Department.

When the part was found, police said it appeared to be a severed human penis. It was examined by local medical personnel, who also believed the part to be human, and then sent to the crime lab.

Sgt. Dan Losada said the local medical personnel only examined the part visually and did not perform any tests. He did not know if decomposition altered the appearance of the teat.

"I've seen the pictures, and it looked like a penis," he said. "I don't know why."

He said officers do not know where the teat came from, and no one has reported an injured cow.

There are slaughterhouses in the area, and it's possible the teat could have come from one of them, Losada said.

Hastings police initially treated the discovery as a homicide investigation in order to collect evidence. Now that the body part has been identified, the investigation has been discontinued.

There are no suspects in the placement of the teat at the car wash on West Second Street where it was found, and the case is now closed, he said.

"This is a good illustration of the fact that things aren't always as they appear, so you can't jump to conclusions," Losada said.

He did not know if the incident was a prank and said no one at the Police Department has indicated that they thought the investigation was a waste of time.

"We proceeded in a way that was in the best interest of all involved," he said. "It turned out it wasn't human, but that's not to say the next time it couldn't be."

The investigation was the first to use SCALES, the South Central Area Law Enforcement Services unit, which includes the Nebraska State Patrol and police and sheriff's departments from Hastings, Grand Island and Kearney.

"This was a good start (for SCALES), and it will be valuable in the future," Hastings Police Chief Larry Thoren said. "It is a dynamic group of officers that will serve our communities well."

This case also illustrated the importance of physical evidence and its examination by a crime lab, he said.

"You learn something from every investigation," Thoren said
