This implies that a is a composite. Contradiction. So either (a-1) or (1+a+a^2+...+a^(n-1)) = 1. Because a >= 1, if a = 1 then a^n - 1 = 0. Test for a>1. If a = 2 then (a-1) = 2 - 1 = 1. Therefor if a^n - 1 is prime and a,n >= 1, a must = 2. QED.
